How It Works

Layer height is one of the most important settings in FDM 3D printing, directly affecting print quality, strength, and speed. This guide recommends optimal values based on established rules.

The 25–75% Rule

A nozzle can reliably extrude layers between 25% and 75% of its diameter:

Min Layer Height = Nozzle × 0.25
Max Layer Height = Nozzle × 0.75

Going below 25% causes poor layer adhesion because the nozzle cannot generate enough pressure. Going above 75% produces rounded, weak layers that do not bond properly.

Quality Levels

  • Ultra Fine (25%) — Maximum detail for miniatures, jewelry, and intricate models. Very slow prints.
  • Fine (35%) — Smooth surfaces with good detail. Ideal for display pieces and cosmetic parts.
  • Balanced (50%) — Good mix of quality and print speed. The default recommendation for most prints.
  • Draft (65%) — Visible layer lines but fast printing. Good for functional prototypes and internal parts.
  • Speed (75%) — Maximum speed at the expense of surface quality. Best for test prints and non-visual parts.

First Layer Height

The first layer is typically printed at 100–150% of the normal layer height (up to the nozzle max). A thicker first layer improves bed adhesion by squishing filament into the build surface, compensating for minor bed leveling imperfections.

Speed vs Layer Height

Doubling the layer height roughly halves print time because each layer covers more vertical distance. However, thicker layers produce more visible layer lines and reduce the ability to reproduce fine curves and overhangs.

Common Nozzle & Layer Height Combinations

  • 0.2 mm nozzle: 0.05–0.15 mm layers (high detail)
  • 0.4 mm nozzle: 0.10–0.30 mm layers (most versatile)
  • 0.6 mm nozzle: 0.15–0.45 mm layers (faster prints)
  • 0.8 mm nozzle: 0.20–0.60 mm layers (large or structural parts)
  • 1.0 mm nozzle: 0.25–0.75 mm layers (rapid prototyping)
